A Walk Across Cumberland Island
Cumberland Island National Seashore
Located off the coast of Georgia, Cumberland Island was Designated as National Seashore in 1972 and is a United Nations sanctioned International Biosphere Reserve protecting numerous species of migratory and shorebirds.
Our journey begins in the Maritime Forest where tree branches dripping with Spanish moss provide a canopy for songbirds filling the air with their music. The ,forest floor is blanketed in ferns and rich green vegetation. In the marshland, a pair of herons adorned in high fashion frocks and flowing locks, pose for the admiring crowd. Muddy trails turn to sand, eventually giving way to an expansive landscape filled with sand dunes topped with green grasses flowing against a beautiful blue sky. Shorebirds refuel on the shore before continuing on their migratory journey.
